Apocalypse Now - 4 out of 5 (5/14/2001)
One of America's top filmmakers creates a hellish vision about the insanity of war and the depths of human madness. A Special Forces Captain gets sent on a mission to track down and kill a renegade Army Colonel. He sets off on a journey that will lead him down a river, through the middle of the war and the darkest parts of himself.
Apocalypse Now is based on Joseph Conrad's novel Hearts of Darkness and uses the Vietnam War for the setting. It has an all-star cast and it is full of great perf

A War Movie Masterpiece............ - 4 out of 5 (12/7/1999)
When discussing the war genre, it's always been so hard to pick one as "the best" one. I have found that most, if not all, war films are brilliant in their own ways. For example, 1998 showcased two different but deeply enthralling WWII films, "Saving Private Ryan" and "The Thin Red Line". A vast improvement over past versions. - 4.75 out of 5 (11/26/1999)
I have seen this film both on VHS and laserdisc and it has never looked as good as it does on DVD. The colors are vibrant without bleeding. This is especially evident in the scenes where colored smoke is employed. I noticed no distracting digital artifacts. The aspect ratio of 2:1 has received alot of negative commentary since it involves a minor cropping of the image. I did not detect any signifcant loss of information secondary to the small alteration in AR (no characters were cut out or chopp

Makes a poor AND strong case for my LD... - 4.5 out of 5 (11/26/1999)
I've been waiting for this DVD for quite awhile. Now that it's here, I wonder why I was so impaitient.
The 5.1 LD that I've owned since before DVD is still and will always be one of the best looking LD's I own.
Noise is minimal and artifacts are almost nonexistant. This DVD however, shows all of that grain that was not very apparent on the LD.
However, since it's only one disc and anamorphic, I have to give the DVD the edge.
Way back when, gee, about a year now (how time flies when you're
